les Enfants Nouvelles (feat. Jeff Reinhart) at Good Children I have a particular reaction to Jeff Rinehart’s work, whether it’s a painting, photograph, or sculpture. This reaction is a not-quite-surfacing laughter plus something like the Superman defeated GIF, funny-sad or disappointed-accepting-wry. Something between understanding and confusion, like ticklish.
Paige Devries, “Blind Spot” at UNO Gallery In each painting and photograph there was what I think of as an “event” an occurrence in the subject. At first the “event” seemed to be the focal point. IN the photographs, this event/focal point seemed pretty static. In the paintings, after looking for several minutes, my attention shifted, and a different passage emerged as the crucial one in the painting.
For example, a dog indicating seemed like the event in “Shadow Boxer” until I came to understand that the event was painting itself.
When I saw this show a couple of weeks ago, I didn't look at a photo book on display. (Like reading introductions in books, or putting on the headphones in galleries, sometimes I inexplicably resist certain types of participation–it’s a glitch. The book is on display and inviting…)On my second visit I looked at the book, page by page. The pairing and layout, the experience, made me think: photographs thrive in books, like poems.
Shawn Hall's open studio I like visiting studios, especially for the first time. There's always an element of finding one’s way, a kind of unfolding, partly because studios are often located in urban corners, under overpasses, places in the city where we pass on our way to other places.
Last night it was the "magic hour" and I didn’t really know where I was going. I parked kind of far away and walked and everything looked like a movie.
And I love the intimacy of artists’ studios, the traces of process in the room that resembles the work, and the forethoughts and B-sides.
The language of paint reverberated between Shawn Hall’s surfaces and Paige Devrais’s paintings I saw earlier in the day: broad brushstrokes, scrapings, fine lines, paint can echo.
…
I’m still finding the form and welcome comments and feedback. See you next week.
